Frozen custard is a super premium ice cream very similar to homemade ice cream. It has some egg in it, which provides a smooth texture. Frozen custard also has less air content than other ice cream. This makes it heavier, fresher, and therefore, weighs a lot more than most other ice creams.
Our frozen custard is served at approximately 26 degrees F, thanks to our patented machine, which allows your taste buds to get a true taste. Regular ice cream is served at about 10 degrees, which tends to "numb" the taste buds. Also, our frozen custard is made fresh daily, with no preservatives or artificial ingredients.
There is a legend that frozen custard was created by an ice cream vendor who added eggs to his ice cream to prevent the ice cream from melting too quickly. To his delight, and ours, a new premium ice cream was discovered. This ice cream with its richer taste and smoother texture became known as "frozen custard." The first frozen custard machine is believed to have been invented in 1919, when it was brought to Coney Island and sold 18,460 cones in its first weekend. Vendors began to bring the treat across the country in carnivals and circuses. By the 1940s, there were hundreds of stands across the East Coast and Midwest.
Steve Nielsen started mixing, freezing, and scooping his frozen custard in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1981. Nielsen's Frozen Custard was quickly recognized as a quality product, and a few months after opening was dubbed "the smoothest stuff around" by the annual Critics Choice Award. Since then, Nielsen's has been given rave reviews by a variety of publications, such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes Magazine, and The Washington Post. But don't take their word for it... come try a frozen custard for yourself!
